Making a garter belt (not adjustable)

This is a VERY simple garter belt..and easy to make.

What you need:
- Pattern paper or ordinary backing paper
- 40 cm of fabric, NOT stretchy (I used ordinary and cheap cotton fabric)
- 4 Garter belt metal grips/suspenders (you can use plastic grips, they are cheaper but they tend to pop open, mostly at the wrong place and time..;P..)
- 1 meter of elastic (should be the widh of the grips, if the elastic is thin, then it can be a bit wider)
- 10 to 15 cm of thick “heavy” elastic band about 5 cm wide
- Hook and eye tape or bra fasteners (I used hook and eye tape, ´couse that was what I had laying around)
- Finishing touches (I used som satin ribbon and swarovski crystals to match my corset)

And

- 1 garter belt (that fits you)

We are going to copy the garter belt, it is easier and faster..:)

This garter belt is made of 5 pieces, but only 3 different pattern pieces: The one in the middle, the one next to it, and the one on the end.

1.Take your paper and lay it on top of the garter belt and copy the 3 different pieces. It can be a little difficult to see through the paper, but you should be able to feel your way around each piece..:).

2. Add 1 cm of seam allowance around each piece

3. Cut it out, and there you have the finished pattern ready to be used

4. I have made the pink garter belt with a lining. I have used the same cotton for the lining as well as the outer fabric. To do that you will need to cut out 2 middle pieces and 4 of each of the side pieces.

5. All the pieces laid out

6/7. Sew the pieces together one by one, with the 1 cm seam allowance

8. Iron down the allowance or if you are using an ordinary cotton fabric as I am..you can simply use your nail to press it down..:P

9. Here we have the two “garter belts”..:). Now take the elastic and cut it in 4 equal pieces, they will go in the four pointy ends.

10. Lay the two “garter belts” front to front, with the elastic pieces going inside between them at the pointy ends. If there is a front and back on the elastic (mine is shiny on one side), make sure that they all turn the same side up.
Do the same with the thick/heavy elastic at one end of the garter belt, also tuck it inside between the two garter belts.

11. Pin them together. Now sew the whole way round, with 1 cm allowance, leaving an opening in the top middle of the belt (12)

12. Turn it inside out, like a pillowcase. Iron it down, so every corner is nice and neat. Sew the opening togther, by machine (sew just 2 or 3 millimeters from the edge of fabric) or by hand (I did it by hand, ´cause I did not want to have a visible sewing line up top).

13/14. Hook and eye sewn on each and of the garter belt (you probably can do it nicer than I did..this was very fast sewing..;P)

15. So now you have to put the garter belt on, also put on a pair of stockings.
Slide the suspenderes on the elastic, and measure the lenght of the elastic, with the suspender going to the edge of the stockings. Good idea to stretch the elastic a little.
Sew the other end of the elastic up top (as you can see done at the bottom corner of photo 16)

16. Make a nice finish :D

And there you have it, a garter belt..:D. Hope you found the tutorial usefull. If you have any questions or critique, ask me at my “ask me” or in the coment box.
